Feel free to shoot me a tweet @CreamBasics and let me know. Next Thursday we'll have another Indie Spotlight, and this Sunday we'll feature 3 new videos for Essential Sundays! Hey there friends! Sorry this one is a bit late, but welcome back to Essential Tuesdays! Typically every Sunday (but this week Tuesday) we go over the three Nintendo-related videos you need to check out. Sonic Mania just launched today, so Happy Mania Day! And with that, let's check out the videos! Are Nintendo Games Just for Kids? This is a question Nintendo fans have been dealing with for decades. We obviously know the answer, but in this video John Zaccari of ChiGuy breaks down just how silly this claim is. It's brash and unapologetic, and a great watch for fans sick of hearing that their favorite franchises are just for kids. A Bit of History Behind Sonic ManiaSonic Mania just released today, and it's already received pretty great review scores across the board. In honor of its release, let's take a look at The Leaderboard's "7 Facts" video. It provides an interesting peak behind the curtain at Mania's roots, development and why you should be psyched that it's finally here! What's Up with Mother 3?Mother 3 has become something of a legend in the gaming community. Cries to have it localized have fallen on deaf ears for years to no avail. What's worse, the series creator has explicitly declared that the franchise has ended with Mother 3. Taking a look back over the history of the game is John from Spawn Wave Media. It's a fascinating watch if you've only ever heard people talk about the game and want to learn more about the elusive title.
And that does it for this week! I hope you enjoyed these picks, and be sure to stop by again on Thursday for some more Nintendo gaming goodness. Cheers til then! --Brent If you're like me, you've been itching for a new Puzzle Quest game for awhile now. Dreadbit's newest title Ironcast seeks to fill the void, and is doing so in full steampunk style. Ironcast is framed around a war that puts players in1880s England fighting back opposing mechs. The very gray and brown aesthetic isn't necessarily the most attractive to me as a lover of color in games, but it undeniably nails the feel it's going for. The well-written character dialogues also add a sense of story and progression to the game, which is a nice for a roguelite . Just like other roguelites, though, if you die once in battle you'll have to start all over again. Ironcast is a blend of several different genres, but when it comes down to it the core of the game is a match-3 puzzler. Similarly to Puzzle Quest, players will create chains of different gems to replenish resources--in this game things like bullets, energy, cool down and so on. After a couple rounds of matching players get to take an action (attack, repair etc.) before handing off the turn to their opponent. This gameplay loop looks absolutely addictive, and it's easy to imagine spending countless hours taking down enemy mechs. In terms of content, Ironcast on the Switch comes packed with all of the DLC released on other versions along with a complete rebalancing of the campaign, truly making the Switch version the definitive version. It's a roguelite so it's meant to be replayed quite a bit, but there are over 50 different unlockables items, persistent rewards between runs and the ability to modify weapons and abilities. All in all, Ironcast looks like a fairly fleshed out game for it's asking price of $13. If you love the steampunk aesthetic, a good puzzle game or the roguelite progression system, this one might be right up your alley. Let us know what you thought of the game if you picked it up! As always, thanks for stopping by, and we'll see you again on Sunday!
--Brent Hello all! Welcome back to another edition of Essential Sundays, a weekly column where we check out the three must-watch Nintendo-related videos of the week. This week we have a lot of Mario-related coverage (as we should--it's Mario+Rabbids month after all)! If you're looking for something a lititle different, be sure to check out our latest Indie Spotlight on the latest eShop gem Slime-San. Without further ado, let's get to it! The Mario+Rabbids Leak from the Dev's POVThe public's first exposure to Mario+Rabbids was quite mixed. There wasn't any gameplay footage leaked, but just the concept of the game sounded horrifyingly impossible to pull off well. When the game eventually premiered at E3 it was generally met with excitement and great interest. But what was it like for the devs when the leak hit? This Eurogamer interview does an excellent job of giving us a rare peak behind the game dev curtain. This Game Might be Deeper Than We Think...Digging into actual Mario+Rabbids game mechanics this time, GameSpot does the upcoming title justice with one of the more in-depth discussions of its features I've seen yet. If you thought that this was just a XCOM-lite, think again. I won't spoil anything--check out the video above and prepare to be surprised with the amount of depth Mario+Rabbids offers! What Makes the Best Mario Game Ever? The latest in their really well-produced series "Inside Super Mario Odyssey," this latest entry takes a look at what makes Odyssey stand out from its predecessors. The comparisons are on point and fair, and it's just exciting seeing how far Mario has come over the years. If you're excited for the lastest entry, it's a must-watch!
That about does it for Essential Sundays this week guys! Thanks for hanging out, and I hope you all enjoyed the column! We'll be back Thursday with another Indie Spotlight, so be sure to come back for that! Until then, have an absolutely awesome rest of your weekend. --Brent Slime-San is the latest in a string of strong Switch indies. Originally released in April on Steam, the game is immediately reminiscent of Super Meat Boy with its twitch platforming and intense challenge. The game is far from a copycat, however. The game's aesthetic, unique mechanics and loads of personality set it in a class all it's own. Slime-San is a little green blob of slime that suddenly gets swallowed whole by a giant worm (a-la classic Spongebob). He is then faced with a choice: stay put and get digested, or platform his way back through the worm to its mouth to escape! The entire premise is very silly and lighthearted, and only serves as a means to get you into the action. As Slime-San, you'll have to perform jumps, phase shifts and aerial maneuvers with precision if you want to complete a stage before the worm's digestive fluids flood the screen and destroy you. It never necessarily feels like you're being timed, but it's just enough to put some pressure on you. Be warned: you're going to die. A lot. The game even keeps track of all your deaths on a given set of levels. Luckily, restarts are quick and easy, greatly lessening the frustration one might feel otherwise. This is a game of trial and error. It feels designed for you to die loads of times getting the level down before coming back later and crushing your time in a speedrun. Another thing that keeps the constant death from wearing on you too much are the pleasant visuals and stellar soundtrack. Seriously, this has some of the catchiest video game music I've heard in years. It all comes together to form a presentation that feels not only welcoming, but uniquely homemade. This is as far from a manufactured game as GoNNER is, and that's saying something. There aren't many games where you can feel the creator's passion through the art, but this is one of them. In terms of content, Slime-San is packing a whopping 100 levels, each comprised of 4 different rooms. After that, newgame+ unlocks with harder versions of each level (I can't even imagine what those are like), as well as Boss Rush and Speed Running modes. There're also unlockables in towns you can visit between levels. Here you'll unlock new moves, borders for your screen, outfits and mini games. It's also been announced that the first major DLC pack released just a few weeks ago on Steam will be coming to the Switch version free of charge. Needless say, there's a lot of game to dig into here.
The Nintendo Switch has had some seriously great indie support lately. Joining the ranks of Graceful Explosion Machine, Kamiko and GoNNER is Slime-San, a little platformer that totally came out of left field. At $12, it's hard not to recommend this one. Here's to Nintendo continuing to bring the best of Steam over to Switch. --Brent Welcome back to CreamBasics! It's been a little while, but I'm so glad to be back. I love you guys, and really appreciate that you come here and check my stuff out. This is, of course, a Nintendo blog focusing on the best Nintendo YouTube videos and games coming to the Switch. Let's get things started! A Steller First Few MonthsThe Switch has seen unparalleled success since launch, and this new Commonwealth Realms video breaks it all down. From recent sales numbers to the software lineup, you can get a pretty solid snapshot of how the Switch is doing right here. To Cook or Not to Cook?Overcooked is one of the heavy hitters of the Switch indie lineup. The release announcement early last week was quite the pleasant surprise, and now it's finally on the eShop for us all to enjoy. But is it worth a download? Luis delves into the pros and cons of the Switch version. It has all the DLC packed in, but might not be optimized the best? Check it out! Not Fresh Enough? Finally, the infamous Hori Splatoon 2 headset is out. Even though it's third party through and through, this headset has been held up since its announcement as an example of how terrible Nintendo's voice chat solution is. Filip does a fine job of showing off the headset in all its glory, from the sub-par audio quality to the slick design. If you're on the fence, this is the video to watch and make your decision.
Well, that about does it! Again, I apologize for being away for a little over a week. I'm back to stay, and look forward to getting back on schedule. Please feel free to shoot me a tweet about anything you'd like to see from the blog going forward. Until next time, cheers! --Brent Hello and welcome back to CreamBasics friends! This is your blog for everything Nintendo-related. Our Essential Sundays posts (or Essential Mondays when we fall behind a bit) give you the Top 3 must-see Nintendo videos from the past week. This week it's (once again) a Splatoon 2 blowout, albeit with some Metroid goodness thrown in for good measure. Let's get to the videos! Just How Upgraded is Splatoon 2?Sigital Foundry has become known as the go-to tech guys in the gaming industry. They got their hands on Splatoon 2's single player Hero Mode, and and result is pretty impressive. I won't spoil anything, but let's just say Splatoon 2 is more of an upgrade than many people gave it credit for. The Importance of Samus ReturnsThe reveal of Metroid: Samus Returns was a huge one at this year's E3 presentation, and for good reason. But should gamers care about a remake, much less a remake of one of the more obscure titles in the franchise? Up-and-coming YouTuber Orpheon does a great job of explaining why 3DS owners have something truly special to look forward to this September. The 4-Hour Splatfest StreamSwitch owners from all over the world had the chance to bask in the glory that was Splatfest this past Saturday. Missed the time slot or don't have a Switch just yet? Don't worry--we've got you covered. Of all the Splatfest streams, GameXplain's stood out if only for having Derrick be the one hosting it. His love of the game shone through and gave the stream a decidedly lighthearted tone. If you have a few hours and want to get yourself hyped for Splatoon 2's Friday release, this is where it's at.
That wraps it up for this week's Essential Monday's! Thanks for stopping by, and as always, we'll see you again Thursday for some more awesome Switch content. Have a great week 'til then! -Brent Welcome back to CreamBasics, the blog that keeps you up to date on all the best Nintendo news with some opinion pieces thrown in for good measure. It's summertime, so for this week's Essential Sundays Extra, we're taking a look at a video running down the Top 5 Switch games coming out in July from Filip. The list is well curated and does a great job breaking down why each game is interesting/why you might want to buy it. Of course the obvious July game is Splatoon 2, but there's a lot more to look forward to as well. Check it out for yourself! -Brent Welcome back to another edition of Essential...Monday's? Yep, this is what happens when things get hectic and pushes back a day. But it's all good! There was a lot that happened this past week for Nintendo fans--namely, the Splatoon 2 Direct! This truly is my most anticipated game of the year, so expect to hear about it from me for awhile haha. In any case, let's get to the videos! The Great Case of the Knockoff DocksThough last week was mostly filled with Splatoon hype, there were also more devious things afoot. Tons of YouTubers were sent portable Switch docks to review from Kickstarter and Indiegogo sites, including Spawn. However, he ended up looking into the docks a bit further and uncovered some damning evidence against the companies involved. You should always be wary when backing items on crowdfunding sites, and this video further solidifies that. The Start of Nintendo's Online ServiceNintendo's online service has been the subject of interest and ridicule alike. We finally got our first peek at the fledgling service during last week's Direct, and the guys over at SwitchForce do a great job breaking it all down and having a genuinely fun discussion about it all. Kick Back and Enjoy the ShowAs always, whenever there's a new Direct out in the wild I can't help but recommend the best stream for you guys to watch. This time, that honor goes to Nathaniel Bandy. His genuine excitement and reactions to everything show just how much a fan he was of the first Splatoon, and yet he still doesn't mindlessly praise everything. It's a good balance, and a great stream.
Thats all for today guys! Thanks as always for reading and watching everything. You're the best! Be sure to come back Thursday for some more great Nintendo Switch content. Til then, have an awesome week! -Brent FC: 0251-72518736 As you all know, the Splatoon 2 Direct just happened and we learned wayyy more about the game. There was a ton of info on everything from events to the new online service. It certainly wasn't all sunshine and rainbows: we still didn't see any new modes, and unfortunately Salmon Run is only playable online on certain days instead of anytime you want. Nonetheless, let's go over the top five new features the Splatoon 2 Direct had to offer. 5. Splatoon Art LivesOne of the biggest letdowns about the Switch for many previous Wii U owners was its loss of Miiverse. The online community was a haven for fan art that players could create using the gamepad. This ended up being a cool feature in regular maps and an essential part of what made Splatfests such brilliant community events. Luckily, art is making its return in the the world of Splatoon 2! There's a new mailbox in Inkopolis Square that players can go to and either draw with the control sticks in TV Mode or on the actual touch screen on handheld mode. These will work just like the Miiverse posts, and it's a brilliant way to keep that Splatoon charm. 4. Surprisingly Cool "Splat Net 2"Who would've thought that Splatoon's app functionality would actually be one of its greatest selling points? Splat Net 2 looks really impressive from a stat tracking standpoint, and being able to shop for new gear from your phone sounds simply awesome. This is the tool hardcore players have been waiting for. Now, we'll just have to see how that voice chat goes... 3. Hot New Idols (and Music)Marina and Pearl shocked viewers everywhere when they were revealed as the new Splatoon idols in an introductory music video at the end of the Direct. The internet has already unanimously voted Marina as best girl, but they both have great designs. Their music also came off as really catchy, favoring a mixture of hip hop and edm. Fans have seemingly already embraced the duo as the new face of Splatoon 2 (though the Callie and Marie flame still burns bright), so I'd say they've been a resounding success! 2. Creative New Weapons & AbilitiesWe all knew new weapons and abilities would be making their way to Splatoon 2, but none of us knew just how awesome some of them would be! Thermal Ink is going to be a major game changer for the meta by allowing you to see people you hit through walls. Object Shredder is less impressive but could still come in clutch if you know you'll be going up against a lot of splat wall users. The real stand out here is the Drop Roller ability, allowing you to tilt away from a super jump to avoid being jump-camped. This and Thermal Ink alone are going to shake things up quite a bit. Then there're the new weapon variants of the Roller and Splat Dualies, both of which looked useful (though I personally lean away from Rollers). The Splat Brella seems really versatile (and maybe a tad overpowered?) and is the first weapon to also act as a shield. The Goo Tuber is going to be an incredibly annoying asset to skilled chargers. And, uh, the Bubble Blower? Hmmm... 1.Each Mode Ranked Separately! This is the biggie. This solves the immense issue of being good at one or two modes but having your entire rank dragged down because you suck at/never play one of them. Having separate ranks for each mode totally solves this and means that players can completely specialize in one kind of ranked play and have that accurately reflected. It's a little thing to most casual players, but something I couldn't be happier about.
That does it for today guys! Sorry this was a day late, but I hope you all enjoyed it! Be sure to check back Sunday for a list of the top 3 Nintendo YouTube videos you should check out from this week. Cheers! -Brent FC: 0251-7251-8736 |
